Welcome to SHARP Pickleball

We’re glad you’ve found SHARP.

SHARP Pickleball is a friendly, fast-growing club based in St Albans and Harpenden, bringing players together through social play, team pickleball, coaching opportunities, league matches and club events.

The club started in 2024 as a small social group of friends looking for something active to do when golf was called off by the weather. Since then, it has grown into a thriving local pickleball club with a strong community on and off the court.

SHARP is built around enjoyable play, fair competition and a welcoming club atmosphere. Our sessions give members the chance to meet other players, improve their game, stay active and take part in the growing pickleball scene across Hertfordshire.

Whether you are new to the sport, building confidence, returning after time away, or looking for competitive match play, SHARP gives members a place to play, improve, compete and feel part of a club.

As the club continues to grow, we aim to keep sessions well organised, friendly and enjoyable for members, while supporting opportunities for development, team play and social connection.

Current Status 🟑

SHARP Pickleball membership is currently at full capacity. This means we are not accepting new members at this time.

The club has grown quickly, and we need to manage membership carefully so sessions stay enjoyable, organised and playable for current members.

Waiting List πŸ“

We operate a waiting list for prospective members who would like to join SHARP Pickleball in the future.

The waiting list is reviewed at regular intervals. When a suitable place becomes available, the club will contact prospective members directly.

Join the waiting list here:

Please note, while the club remains at full capacity, the waiting time for membership might be some time.

What Happens Next πŸ”„

After adding your name to the waiting list, no further action is needed.

The club will continue to review capacity, session availability, current member numbers and overall playability before offering new places.

New members will only be invited when the club has enough space to support them properly.

Playing Locally While You Wait πŸ“

If you are new to pickleball or looking to get on court sooner, Everyone Active runs pickleball sessions at Batchwood.

Many SHARP members also play there, so it is a useful way to get familiar with the courts, meet local players and stay active while waiting for a SHARP membership place.

Visit everyoneactive.com and select Batchwood centre.

What Membership Includes πŸ“

SHARP membership gives players access to regular club sessions, social play, coaching opportunities, team training, club events and competitive opportunities.

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a sport played with a paddle that combines elements from badminton, tennis, and ping pong.

The game is played on a court with the same measurements as badminton doubles.

The net is similar to a tennis net, but a little lower.

The game is played with a hard β€œpaddle” and a hard, hollow plastic ball with holes in it.

Even though pickleball is like tennis, there are important differences that make pickleball especially more accessible for children and seniors.

The most important difference is the speed of the ball. A pickleball ball travels at about a third of the average speed of a tennis ball. The pickleball court is roughly a third of the size of a tennis court.

The smaller surface area combined with the slower ball speed and an underhand serve, makes pickleball easier to play than tennis.

The game is the fastest growing game in the USA with more than 4.2 million players. The tipping point was around 5 years ago. Now, Pickleball Courts are popping up all over the country including in retirement communities. The game started to take off in the UK around 2011 and now has over 120 Places to play and over 4,000 estimated players.

Pickleball Rules

The basic rules for singles and doubles have been established by the World Pickleball Federation.

Court and basic setup

  • Played singles or doubles
  • Court size is the same as badminton
  • Net is lower than tennis
  • Each side has a β€œkitchen” area near the net

Scoring

  • Games usually go to 11 points
  • You must win by 2 points
  • Only the serving team scores points
  • In doubles, each player serves before the serve switches, except the first serve of the game

The serve

  • Must be underhand
  • Paddle must contact the ball below your waist
  • Serve diagonally into the opposite service box
  • Ball must land past the kitchen line
  • One serve attempt only

The double bounce rule

  • After the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once
  • Then the serving team must also let it bounce once
  • After these two bounces, players can volley or play off the bounce

The kitchen rule

  • The kitchen is the non volley zone near the net
  • You cannot volley the ball while standing in the kitchen
  • You cannot step into the kitchen after a volley due to momentum
  • You can enter the kitchen to play a ball that has bounced

Faults

A fault stops play. Common ones:

  • Ball lands out
  • Ball hits the net and does not go over
  • Volleying in the kitchen
  • Not following the double bounce rule
  • Serve lands in the kitchen or wrong box

Serving order in doubles

  • Both players on a team serve before losing the serve
  • First server starts from the right side
  • Score determines which side you serve from
  • Even score, serve right
  • Odd score, serve left

Key tips for playing properly

  • Watch your feet near the kitchen line
  • Call the score clearly before serving
  • Focus on consistent serves, not power
  • Let the first two shots bounce every rally
